LAST CALL FOR DRV MOD 1

I’d love to build one of these for you if you can have some patience for me! I’ll send out as soon as I’m finished! This order is currently opened up, but will not last for long, as I have limited supplies. For those interested, there will be less than 200 of this variant in circulation when it’s all said and done.

Note: If you’d like me to build you this circuit into any of the available enclosures currently offered, you are in luck, just put in an order, and then email me your order number with the requested change. I’m already doing a bunch of changes, and would love to get you the enclosure you love in this circuit.

A NEW / OLD + DIFFERENT CIRCUIT FOR DRV!

LIMITED PRODUCTION, just opened up some more slots, but this circuit will be very rare.

As I transition into a new phase of DRV production, I’m doing some really fun and limited edition circuit tweaks. This one is especially interesting if you are a pedal tweaker! I’m sending this pedal with the OPA2134 (Burr Brown) op-amp, but it will also come with a standard TL072, and also an NE5532 op-amp, for you to mess around with (more about this below). Mod your own pedal and further differentiate your sound!

While I still love the TL072 in the DRV circuit, it’s really interested to hear the subtle and not so subtle differences that occur with changing an op-amp. No soldering required! All you will need is your fingers, or a small flathead screwdriver. I will include instructions on exactly how to do it, but really it isn’t hard at all! You’ll also need a Phillips head screwdriver to take off the 4 screws to remove the bottom plate of the enclosure.

This is another thing that I’ve always thought about doing, and I’m happy to offer it to you guys now. It’s a bit of a labor of love for me to produce these units by hand, and to include the extra chips, which is why it will be limited. This variant will not be around long, and will be limited by nature of my ability to build. It sounds overall a bit warmer, fatter, a little cleaner, smoother, similar to the recently release “PROTOTYPE” version.

This version of DRV also has a zero gain mode (a bit of an Easter Egg), which is really nice. When you turn the DRV knob all the way down, it takes all of the distortion side of the circuit, and you only hear the preamp. In order to get a useful sound out of this mode, you need to completely open up the CUT knob (turn it all the way down), and even then it’s still a little dark, but really cool sounding. At this point, you are hearing the dark nature of the preamp section that is “always on” within the DRV circuit. It’s really neat, I think! This also reacts differently depending on which op-amp you are using.

I’ve made this circuit for a few friends over the years and my friends all love it! Mark Johnston, Gideon Boley, Josh Thompson, and Jason Goodwin, to name a few. Really I feel like I could call this the signature pedal of any of these guys, I love how Mark uses the zero gain mode, as you can see on my instagram page shortly.

I’m including a homemade DRV MOD 1 sticker on each pedal. Of course you can take the sticker off, lol. Or hit me up if you’d like to receive it un-applied.

On a standard white No3 enclosure, some pedals will have a smooth powder coat, and some will have a light texture. Both are really nice!

Will ship with standard packaging materials, including a screen printed bag.

Runs on 9v standard (boss style) power. Battery clip or power supply is not included. An isolated power supply is recommended.

About the Op-Amp options included

TL072 - This is the standard, probably my favorite overall. It has a warm and soft low-end character, is very clear, and does the job nicely.

NE5532 - This one is used in one of my all time favorite pedals - the Bondi Effects Sick As. And while it doesn’t necessarily cause DRV to sound more like a Sick As, it adds a different midrange character, and tightens up the low end. Palm mutes become a bit more punchy, with a little more push, and a little less smoosh (to be technical), but it’s also a very good sounding option, clearly!

OPA2134 - I’m also making this one “Hi-Fi”, just for fun! This is a higher fidelity chipset, made by Burr Brown, and has a lower noise floor. I’ve previously only used this chipset in the Nickel-Plated DRV LTD version, as well as the recently released “PROTOTYPE”. This series will also be limited, and even further differentiated sonically. This version gets a little smoother on the midrange, warmer, fatter overall, and reacts noticeably different in zero gain mode, where it is even cleaner.

As you may be aware, international shipping has been incredibly slow. Due to the state of things in the world right now, I feel that it is most wise to change shipping carriers for all international orders. This will unfortunately cause the shipping to increase, even charging slightly less than actual cost. I am also doing my best to supply international retailers, so hit up your local shop! EU orders will be responsible for VAT taxes, and all countries are responsible for knowing the import tax laws within your country.

A uniquely designed steel enclosure made with quality components throughout. My goal was to spare no expense. I realize that sometimes in the world of guitar gear, there isn’t always one answer in choosing the best components and designs, so I just picked my favorites. This includes Switchcraft 11 open frame jacks, and a super quiet soft touch switching system via an internal relay.

I have been working on this project for the better part of three years, as a collaboration and with engineering by Jon Ashley of Bondi Effects. I feel that the pedal is unique in design and sonically unlike anything I have ever heard, especially in the lower gain and boost settings. There is a subtlety that feels more like a vintage pedal than a modification of a classic. There are two circuits present in the pedal, one distortion and one preamp boost, running at 18v via an internal voltage regulator. I made this pedal with the idea to create a distinction for my own sound, and what I found is that it is an extremely useful tool for capturing a lot of different types of sounds. I am most proud of the lower gain side, as I feel it is the most unique section of the pedal, but I must also include that the gain section is extremely sweet sounding throughout, especially for heavy and complex chords. There is a midrange punch that I love and a warmth and thickness that reminds me a bit of a ribbon mic. When the development of this pedal turned into something new and unique, it became the catalyst to starting 1981 Inventions, so I decided to make this the first official release.
